Reasons For Tooth Extraction

A tooth extraction may sometimes be a necessity in adults.

Permanent teeth are designed to last a lifetime. However, circumstances may call for extraction of a tooth. Some major reasons why a tooth may be extracted include damage, decay, or trauma. Other reasons for tooth extraction include:

Crowding of the mouth. Dentists at Mighty Children’s Dentistry, Parkland, Florida may do a tooth extraction as preparatory for orthodontia. Orthodontia is a procedure done to properly align the teeth. This becomes impossible if a person has excessively big teeth. In the same vein, if it is difficult for a tooth to erupt (due to insufficient room in the mouth), then your dentist may have to pull it out.

Infection.Tooth extraction is important when a tooth is infected. As a matter of fact, it may be a life-saving procedure. Tooth decay can facilitate entry of bacteria into the pulp. This results in infections. The dentist at Parkland, Florida can correct this with a procedure known as root canal therapy. However, if the infection is too severe, then your dentist may need to extract the tooth to prevent the spread of infection.

Other reasons that may warrant a tooth extraction include:

  • Risk of infection (due to Compromization of the immune system)

  • Periodontal disease

The Tooth Extraction Procedure

Tooth extractions are performed by oral surgeons and dentists at Coral Springs, Florida. Before your dentist extracts your tooth, he or she will inject you with a local anesthetic. The anesthetic numbs the affected area.In some cases, the dentist may use a very strong anesthetic. This will make you to sleep all throughout the procedure.

If you’ve got an impacted tooth, your gingival tissue (the gum) and the bone tissue that covers your tooth will be cut out. Witha pair of forceps, your dentist will get hold of your tooth and rock it in a gentle way to loosen it from the ligaments and jaw bone that hold it in place.

A clot forms in the tooth socket once it’s pulled out. The dentist will insert a gauze pad into the socket and you’ll bite it down. This will help stop the bleeding. Sometimes, stitches (that dissolves on their own) will be placed to seal the gum edges over the site of extraction.

What Happens After A Tooth Extraction?

Recovery from a tooth extraction typically takes a few days. The tips listed outlined below can help to enhance recovery, minimize discomfort, and reduce the risk of infection.

  • Take analgesics as prescribed

  • Reduce your level of participation in physical activities. Have some rest.

  • Put an ice bag on the area of extraction. This will help to reduce the swelling.

  • Do not spit or rinse your mouth forcefully for a day at least. The goal is to prevent dislodging of the blood clot that forms in the empty socket.

  • Avoid drinking from a straw for the first 24-48 hours after the procedure.

  • Avoid smoking. Smoking can impede the healing process.

  • Do not eat hard or solid foods until the extraction site heals completely.

  • Do not stop brushing or flossing. Regular brushing and flossing will help to prevent infection. However, be careful not to floss or brush the extraction site.
