What Are Athletic Mouth Guards?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD)  there has been a prevalence of sports-related orofacial injuries in our nation’s youth which has sparked a need for prevention. It has been proven that dental and facial injuries can be significantly reduced by introducing mandatory protective equipment.  Sports-related dental injuries can be substantial because of the potential for pain, psychological effects, and economic implications.

An athletic mouth guard, also known as a sports guard or mouth protector is a device that is worn over your teeth to safeguard them from orofacial trauma (blows to the head and face). Athletic mouth guards are important for every athlete and should be worn in all sports that involve body contact, flying equipment, or falls. Sports such as hockey, football, soccer, basketball, mountain biking, skateboarding, and gymnastics are just a few. Additionally, mouth guards serve as shock absorbers and offer protection against cut lips, broken teeth, and other forms of oral trauma. If you have a bridge, an orthodontic appliance (braces), or other fixed dental device, your Pediatric Dentist,  Dr. Aurelio A. Bula will recommend a suitable custom mouth guard that works best for you.

What Are The Types Of Athletic Mouth Guards?

All athletic mouth guards should be tear-resistant, comfortable, and resilient. The mouth guard should fit comfortably and not impede your breathing or speech. There are three types of mouth guards:

  • Customized mouth guards — Customized mouth guards are designed specifically for each individual and are the most recommended.  Custom-fabricated mouth guards are created by taking an impression and making a dental model of the patient’s dentition. To make a custom mouth guard, Dr. Aurelio A. Bula of Mighty Children’s Dentistry, Parkland, Florida, will fabricate your mouth guard from your dental model. Custom-made mouth guards have a better feel than other types of mouth guards and fit perfectly into your dentition. These mouth guards are uniquely designed for a perfect fit, maximum protection, cushioning, and retention.  Many athletes prefer this type of mouth guard because they are comfortable and offer the best protection.

  • Boil-and-bite mouth guards are available commercially at many department and sporting-goods stores as well as online.  These are produced on a mass scale and made of a thermoplastic material that once boiled is adapted to your teeth. You may alter the shape by placing the guard in hot water. After heating, you bite into the thermoplastic material to create a better fit.  Instructions must be followed carefully to obtain good results.

  • Stock mouth guards — These mouth guards can also be purchased over-the-counter, come pre-formed, offer the least protection and are ready to wear.  Stock mouth guards may feel bulky and interfere with speaking and breathing for some individuals.

How Long Do Athletic Mouth Guards Last?

Athletic mouth guards used by children and adolescents may need to be replaced at regular intervals since they are still in their oral developmental stage. Ill fitting mouth guards are ineffective at protecting the dentition of your child.  For athletes who engage in several sporting activities, Dr. Aurelio A. Bula, at Mighty Children’s Dentistry, Coral Springs, Florida will periodically evaluate the fit of your mouth guard at your dental check-up visits.

If you need a well-fitted mouth guard for your child, Mighty Children’s Dentistry, Coral Springs, Parkland, Florida, is just the place for you!
