Did someone say fluoride?  Fluoride is nature’s cavity warrior. It is found in many water sources and is naturally present in certain foods and beverages. Dental fluoride is one of the most effective ways to prevent tooth decay and maintain excellent dental health in children. Fluoride treatments are both safe and effective in decreasing the prevalence of cavities in children, by about 95%, when combined with dental sealants.

Every day our tooth enamel gains or loses minerals through 2 processes:

  • Demineralization

  • Remineralization

Demineralization refers to the loss of minerals from the enamel of your tooth. The process of demineralization takes place when the enamel is attacked by acids that are formed from sugars and bacterial plaque in the mouth.

Remineralization on the other hand, is the process of re-deposition of minerals on the enamel of your tooth. Remineralization occurs when you consume food and water that contains the said minerals.

If demineralization is greater than remineralization, the end result is tooth decay.

Fluoride is a mineral that is used to prevent tooth decay by enhancing your teeth’s resistance to bacterial attacks. In children below 6 years of age, fluoride helps in the development of the underlying permanent teeth. As a result, it becomes difficult for acids to attack the teeth. Fluoride enhances tooth remineralization and disrupts the attack caused by acids in both children and adults.

What Are The Various Forms Of Fluoride?

The natural forms of fluoride can be found in water and foods. Fluoride can be applied directly to the teeth through mouth rinses and fluoridated toothpaste. Fluoride-containing mouth rinses are available over-the-counter. Your dentist will evaluate your child’s risk for developing dental caries. Dr. Aurelio A. Bula may recommend prescription strength fluoride if your child is determined to be at a high risk.

What’s The Most Appropriate Age To Use Fluoride?

Fluoride is very important for infants and children  from 6 months to 16 years of age. During this time, the primary and permanent teeth are forming.  Research has shown that topical fluoride which is found in mouth rinses, fluoride treatments, and toothpaste is helpful in fighting tooth decay as well as strengthening developing teeth.

Fluoride treatment is also beneficial to those at risk of tooth decay. These include:

  • People with Xerostomia (dry mouth)

  • Gum disease or periodontitis

  • High Caries Risk

What Are The Risks Associated With Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride is safe when used as directed by your child’s dentist, Dr. Aurelio A. Bula in Parkland, Florida. However, fluoride can be toxic if it is not used as recommended and a higher than indicated dose is ingested. For this reason, parents must keep a close watch on the amount of fluoride used by their children. All fluoride products should be kept out of the reach of children, especially those below 6 years of age.

Excessive fluoride ingestion may causes defects in the appearance of a child’s tooth enamel. These defects can range from very faint white specks to very obvious brown discolorations.

Dr. Aurelio A. Bula will make fluoride recommendations based on your child’s individual needs.

Does Bottled Water Contain Fluoride?

No scientific studies have proven that bottled water increases one’s risk of tooth decay. According to the American Dental Association, the fluoride content of bottled water may not be at optimal levels (i.e. 0.7-1.2 ppm). To determine the fluoride content of your bottled water, please read the label or reach out to the manufacturer of your bottled water.
